I come up with meanings like "last", "past", "recent", "final" for both words. I don't know which meaning to use with which word. | 14. Aug 2023
ПРОШЛЫЙ is always used with time
прошлый год - last year
прошлый месяц - last month
ПОСЛЕДНИЙ means latest, most recent, last in a row,
or the very last.
последняя версия - latest version, most recent version
You could say
прошлая версия, but it would mean previous version.
However it is not always interchangeable!
последний посетитель - last visitor
прошлый посетитель - doesn’t really make sense because it is used with an object not time
Found this on the internet
"последний вторник" - sounds weird if taken out of context. As if time stopped and there'll be no more Tuesdays.
"последний вторник июня" = "the last Tuesday in June" - this one is fine.
"прошлый вторник" = "last Tuesday", relative to the reported moment.
*"прошлый вторник июня" hardly makes any sense.”
