Unfortunately the translation of 我是独子 as "I'm an only child. (male)" is inaccurate. As the detail says: 独子 is “only son", which is correct, but he can have sisters. If he is an only child, he is called 独生子。
Also the female version could be added:
独女 only daughter (which can have brothers)
独生女 only daughter (as only child).
